Fragrant Pathways to Peace

Updated: Jun 13, 2021

Peace: A state or condition characterized by tranquility, calm, serenity, contentment

Our sense of smell is vital to our wellbeing. Every day we breathe over 23,000 times, inhaling around 240 cubic feet of air that floods our smell receptors with information. Then we respond to that information intuitively. Smell has a powerful effect on behavior...if you surround yourself with a new smell, your behavior changes. Smells can ease stress, boost energy, elevate mood, improve libido, and even treat many illnesses. Smell is the only one of our five senses that never shuts off, it works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the day one is born to the present. The sense of smell is beginning to be recognized as a valuable healing tool.

Throughout thousands upon thousands of years, people have been using aromatic plants to maintain or regain health and vitality of the body, mind, and spirit. Our ancestors knew that various plants could be used to treat certain health challenges, and this information filtered down generation after generation. They also found that some aromatic plants could have a major impact on the mind and emotions. They knew that smelling Rosemary was mentally stimulating, that Lavender quieted their minds, that Spikenard grounded them and took them into deep meditation. In the last decade or two tremendous amounts of research has proven a great deal of what our forbearers said about the power of these plants. Now we have not only the plants we have the essences of the plants in the form of essential oils. These highly concentrated liquids can play a significant role in supporting us in maintaining balance in our mental/emotional lives.

There are different essential oils recognized to assist in achieving or maintaining various states of balance and tranquility. Some of these are:

ACCEPTANCE: Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), Pine needle (Pinus sylvestris)

BALANCE: Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Juniperberry (Juniperus communis), Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)

CONFIDENCE: Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), Jasmine (Jasminum officinale or sambac), Rose (Rosa damascena or centifolia)

ENLIGHTENMENT: Frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Sandalwood (Santalum album), Spikenard (Nardastachus jatamansi)

GROUNDING: Ginger (Zingibar officinale), Patchouli (Cymbopogon patchouli), Vetiver, (Andropogon muricatus)

JOY: Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara), Orange, sweet (Citrus sinensis), Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)

PEACE: Angelica seed (Angelica archangelica), Frankincense (Boswellia carteri), Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia), Sandalwood (Santalum album), Spikenard (Nardastachus jatamansi)

Using these oils can be as easy as taking a drop or two and applying it to your hair, putting a drop or two on a tissue and carrying it in your pocket, diffusing the oils into the air using a diffuser, or putting 12-15 or so drops in a 2-ounce spritzer bottle filled with water and spraying it into the air. Adding 5-12 drops of an essential oil to a warm bath containing1 tbsp. of liquid soap and bath salts and soaking for 15-20 minutes gives you not only the healing effects of the oil but the relaxing benefits of the bath itself. For meditation, put 2-3 drops on a piece of terra cotta and place it next to you, allowing the oils to slowly evaporate and fill the air with nature’s exquisite scent.
