ADHD and Essential Oils

The principle behind aromatherapy is that certain naturally occurring chemicals contained within essential oils can be used to treat a wide variety of physical, mental and emotional disorders. The success of these essential oils arises from the fact that they stimulate parts of the body that are not functioning properly, restoring the body to its natural state. Recent scientific studies have confirmed the presence of certain key chemicals in essential oils that may react with the nervous, muscular system, and all other systems of the body to encourage healing.

Aromatherapy treatments tend to differ for each individual. The correct oil or blend is best determined with a Clinical Consultation between Aromatherapist & client. We do know that some essential oils appear to be especially effective for the person with ADD or ADHD because of their well-known properties.

Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) France: It is often effective in producing a slight sedative effect, causing a person to calm down & relax.

Cedarwood Atlas (Cedrus atlantica) Morocco: This oil is thought to stimulate the central nervous system, it is also very grounding.

Vetiver (Andropogon zizanoides) Java: Very calming and grounding. Can improve concentration.

METHODS OF USE varies from simple inhalation to application to the skin.  An important piece to remember is that due to the concentration of essential oils, in most cases they are to be diluted prior to use on the skin.  Some simple guidelines are:

              Environmental Fragrancing

Spritzers – 3.5 ozs distilled water, .5 oz witch hazel, and 24+ drops essential oil

Steam – 1-3 drops of essential oil in hot water, fan steam towards you or cover head and water container – breath deeply until oils can no longer be smelled

Diffusion – follow manufacturer’s guidelines (cold air diffusion is are best)

Nebulizing – machine that creates a mist of water and essential oil blown into the air

Evaporation – apply 2-8 drops to a porous surface (terra cotta clay is great), allow to evaporate

Massage Oil – approximately 5-15 drops essential oil to 1 oz. carrier oil with lower

                concentration for children, frail/elder people

Hair/Scalp Treatment – 12 drops essential oil to 1oz carrier oil

              Bathing –

Salt – add bath salts to water as it is running, turn water off add 3-10 drops

                          of essential oil, stir

Milk – 3-10 drops essential oil in ¼ cup whole milk, add to water after tub is

filled with water and turned off

Bath Salts – 3-10 drops of essential oil per cup of bath salts

Showers – after shower, apply 1-5 drops of essential oil to wet cloth, vigorously rub over body, rinse off

Clay necklaces are also a great way to have the oil with you to use as needed. Another great option would be to make an Inhaler that carries your scent with you no matter where you go and most schools will allow the child to have this with them during the day. Making diluted oil or blend of oils placed in a Roller Ball Glass Bottle, this way the oils can be placed on the body, normally at the pulse points, bottom of feet, and back of neck.  (LovingScents sells these items, if needed)
